GST or Goods and Service tax is one of the most important compliance for businesses in India and the online GST Portal is a one-stop solution for it. From GST Registration, to online GST payment and filing GST returns, the GST portal offers all GST-related services available out there. However, you can only avail these services after you login to the portal. Here’s a simple guide on how to login to GST Portal both for first time and existing users. Note that you can only login to the GST portal if you have obtained the GST Registration and have an active GSTIN.

GST Portal & Its Services

GST portal is a platform introduced by the Indian Government to compile all online services related to GST at one place for the convenience of taxpayers. Such a compilation helps taxpayers get quick and easy access to these services, saving their time and effort spent on navigating through multiple websites otherwise.

In order to really appreciate the importance of the GST Portal, you should be aware of the services it offers. The GST portal offers end-end services of GST compliance for businesses, including services related to GST registration, GST Payment, Refunds, e-way bill generation and tracking the statuses of GST Applications. Let’s understand what each of these services offer.

GST Registration

If you’re a new user not yet registered under GST, you can do so through the GST Portal. The process is entirely online. You can also track the status of your application on the portal by submitting the Application Reference Number or ARN generated at the end of the application process. Further, if any clarifications are sought by the department, you can also file replies to them on the portal itself. Read our dedicated page on GST Registration for more information.

GST Payments

Once you are registered for GST, you can start paying the taxes applicable to your business. For this, you can create the payment challan and pay the applicable tax on the portal itself. You can also track the status of your payment on the portal and raise any grievances you have regarding the payment through form GST PMT-07, also available on the portal for your convenience.

E-Way Bills

E-way bills are generated to track the status of goods in transit. A GST registered taxpayer involved in interstate transportation of goods valued over Rs.50,000 needs to generate e-way bills for this purpose. Such bills can be generated on the GST Portal itself. The portal also provides complete information about the e-way bill system and mentions a helpline number through which you can resolve all your further queries.

Refunds and Tracking Application Status

GST Portal allows you to track the status of GST applications related to Registration and Refunds. You simply need to submit the ARN or Application Reference Number for this purpose. Application Reference Number or ARN is the number generated after you complete filling the registration and refund application to the Department.

Process of New User Login to GST Portal

If you’re new to the GST portal and are signing in for the first time, you will have to do so using your GSTIN number or User ID. GSTIN is allotted to GST registered businesses, immediately after the completion of the registration process. However, if you are an Unregistered business and still want to avail the services of the GST Portal, you can generate a User ID through the portal itself. For this, you can go to the “User Services” option on the menu bar of the portal and click on “Generate User ID for Unregistered Applicant”. Note that unregistered users can only avail a few restricted services on the portal which include Claiming Refund, applying as a supplier to e-commerce operators, and applying for Advance Ruling. Once your GSTIN or User ID is generated, you can proceed with the first user login Process. The steps you need to follow are mentioned below :

Step 1 : Visit the GST portal

The first step is to visit the GST portal on the link. In the Top right corner, you will find the login button. Click on this button to visit the login page. Process of Existing User Login to GST Portal

After you’ve received your login credentials, you can proceed to login on the GST portal as an existing user. The process is extremely simple. You are just required to enter the Username and password you generated in the first step on the Login Page. Next, click on proceed and you will successfully be signed in to the portal. The dashboard displaying all services will appear on your screen.

Challenges & Concerns When Logging into the GST Portal :

While the GST Portal brings a lot of convenience to the table, like any digital platform, it can sometimes present a few challenges and concerns. Let’s explore some common issues you might encounter when logging into the GST Portal and how to tackle them :

  • Forgotten Password or User ID : It’s easy to forget login details, especially if you’re juggling multiple accounts. If you find yourself locked out due to a forgotten password or User ID, don’t worry. On the login page, you’ll usually find options to reset your password or retrieve your User ID. Follow the instructions, and you’ll be back on track in no time.
  • Technical Glitches : Technology can be finicky at times, and you might face technical glitches when trying to access the GST Portal. Slow loading, error messages, or pages not responding are common issues. Before you hit the panic button, try refreshing the page, clearing your browser cache, or accessing the portal during off-peak hours. If the problem persists, reaching out to the GST helpdesk or technical support can provide a solution.
  • Browser Compatibility : The GST Portal may work optimally on certain web browsers while displaying issues on others. Ensure you’re using a compatible and updated browser for a smooth experience. Popular browsers like Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or Microsoft Edge often provide better compatibility with government portals.
  • Security Concerns : Since the GST Portal involves sensitive financial and business information, security is a top concern. Always ensure that you’re accessing the official GST Portal website and not falling for phishing scams. Look for the “https://” in the URL and verify the SSL certificate to ensure a secure connection. Avoid using public Wi-Fi networks and keep your login credentials confidential.
  • Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) : While 2FA adds an extra layer of security, it can also pose a challenge if you’re unable to receive the verification code promptly. Make sure your registered mobile number and email address are up to date. If you face issues receiving the code, contact the GST helpdesk to resolve the matter.
Conclusion

GST Portal is a gamechanger in the realm of GST taxation. Not only does it provide all essential GST-related services but also provides necessary information that GST taxpayers must have the knowledge of. This includes information related to GST laws, GST updates, E-way bill system and so on. By successfully logging in to the portal through the process mentioned in the blog, you can avail all these services and access all these information with the click of a button.
